What this site remembers.
This is a personal blog, not an advertising network. The site collects enough information to understand what readers find useful and to deliver email updates—without selling data or following anyone across the web.
Readership analytics
If you allow analytics, this site assigns a random first-party visitor identifier and a 30-minute session identifier. They are used only for gclark.us and are stored in a private database.
The analytics system records:
- Pages viewed, referring site, and campaign tags such as UTM parameters.
- Reading depth, foreground-visible time, elapsed page time, link clicks, searches, copies, and video visibility.
- Page-level summaries such as maximum scroll depth, interaction count, engaged views, and quick exits.
- The subscription funnel, excluding the email address from analytics events.
- Coarse device context such as mobile/desktop, viewport range, language, time zone, theme, reduced-motion preference, and connection category.
- Performance measures such as loading time, layout shift, and interaction delay.
What is not collected
The analytics system does not store raw IP addresses, browser fingerprints, keystrokes, copied text, precise location, advertising identifiers, or activity on other websites. Search terms are recorded only after analytics is allowed, so avoid putting sensitive information into search.
Retention and control
Raw events, pseudonymous sessions, and search terms expire after 400 days. Aggregate page and traffic counts may be retained longer because they do not contain visitor identifiers. Your analytics choice is remembered for six months, and the visitor identifier expires after roughly thirteen months.
Global Privacy Control and browser “Do Not Track” signals disable analytics. You can also change your choice at any time.
Email subscriptions
When you subscribe, your email and reader profile are stored privately in the site’s database and passed to an email delivery provider. Analytics records the funnel step and selected reader type, but never includes the email address in analytics events.
